Blackouts have already begun in southern California. So far only "rolling" blackouts are in effect to conserve power without waiting until demand reaches the point of no return.

The electrical shortage is real. People are prepared with candles and flashlights, alternative heating and cooking arrangements. The peak usage is expected when air conditioning is turned on and they will be ready.

The power companies shot themselves in the foot when they backed the initiative to deregulate the industry. They raise prices to offset higher costs of natural gas - we just didn't know the gun was loaded, folks.
