Be careful of responding to the latest non-profit organizations that swear to work for the preservation of the environment. New laws allow non-profits to organize. There is a fortune in the annual dues collected from bulk mail solicitation. With only a few thousand dollars and well-chosen words an individual can start an organization.

That's fine. That's legal. But what of your dollars?

The first dollars go into the structure which may or may not have a paid director. Leftover dollars will go to the cause. But what is the cause. So I start a non-profit called Whatever For The Environment. Money comes in because I've purchased the mailing list of very faithful environmentalists. I collect big bucks because a lot of people want to protect/save/benefit the environment. I decide that the money will be spent undermining environmental education in schools. Who checks up on where the money goes? Only foundations who grant money to non-profits will expect an accounting. Otherwise No One Checks Up.

Beware of new titles for old causes.
