SEVEN YEARS ON THE INTERNET
CALLS FOR A RESPECTFUL SALUTE

And these are seven years of commentary and issues that shaped our lives. Seven years of reflection on current events that pleased us or horrified us. Seven years of dedication to giving worldwide visitors the viewpoint of an ordinary family. Seven years of hopes and dreams and ideas that reflect those of the thousands who come annually to browse.

On February 25, 1997, the SalmonRiver Gazette became a worldwide news vehicle. The website didn't materialize that day. At a family get to gather which is an annual event, the siblings brainstormed about the Internet. A website would be a place to put our ideas, our talents, and imaginations on display. I had a computer for many years for writing and drawing. Pixel drawings were a particular challenge for me in the 1980's. Tom got a degree in Computer Science in 1979. Tim was into manual writing. Nancy was immersed in research about myths and superstitions and had reams of typed material to prove it. Dan had six years in the Air Force writing software to modernize computer programs for various applications. In continuing his own education he worked with software that needed a website to demonstrate his skills.

Mike was an outdoorsman and lived in an area rich in violent geology and had a penchant for sharing its fascination. As a salmon fisherman, a river was a good vehicle for spreading information and he was familiar with Oregon's Salmon River just over the hill. If the website was to offer news and views of our combined areas - from the border of Canada to the border of Los Angeles - it should become an official journal, a gazette. Salmon River Gazette had a nice flow of its own. And it flows on.

Seven years on the world wide web is somewhat of a record. Very few webpages put up in 1997 survive today. We were in no way pioneers but we saw the intrigue and excitement of cyberspace and jumped in with all feet. Our dedication continues. And it is a whole lot of fun!
