Today Tinsley/Mallard
Zelnick and reporters who can read

The duck has turned-off his television today and is out and about talking about Bob Zelnick, a former reporter for ABC News who, according to Mallard, was fired for writing a critical book on Vice President Gore. The middle of the comic strip says that ABC didn't object to "Sam and Cokie doing it." (referring, I guess to writing books). And then the cartoon closes by saying TV networks are usually proud of a reporter who's READ a book.

Take the Duck's comments with a large grain of salt. Mallard is spends more than half of his waking time in front of the TV (based upon a percentage of cartoons drawn).

I wasn't familiar with Bob Zelnick, so I did some digging. Mr. Zelnick is certainly not a poster-boy for the ultra-left. His previous book pointed out the failure that was (and in some places, still is) racial-quotas/affirmative-action. And he made no secret that he was writing a "biography of a major national leader" (taken from his bio on ABCnews.com, 1/31/1998).

Perhaps his supervisor felt that he had lost his edge along with his journalistic integrity. In an interview on CNN (aired 4/11/1998) he was asked if in this political climate "can Journalists maintain their standards?" to which he replied "... the answer to this evening's proposition, I regretfully say, is no."

Hmmm. He cannot maintain his own standards? Maybe there's more to his leaving ABC than we know about.

But I have a different question. Bob's departure from ABC was reported almost two months ago. Surely Mallard isn't written two months in advance (other issues seem to get more timely coverage from the -duck). What took so long for his outrage to swell into this outpouring of support?

Perhaps it's because the Justice Department just received evidence that the same bazillion-aire who is paying Ken Starr is ALSO paying Starr's chief witness. It seems to me that whenever that type of story breaks, the duck is camped out in his recliner watching info-mercials!

Dan, why are you picking on this dim-witted duck anyway?
