On The Beach

A cormorant walked to the fence and managed to get over
it and proceed to the water.
A crab came out of the shadowed crack in the rocks.
The green-backed night heron stalked for food among
the rocks.
Over the open water a trawler moved to fishing grounds
toward oil rigs.
The Channel Islands on the horizon protect the beach from devastating
breakers
Rolling water nevertheless battered the sand beach as the tide receded.
All new and impressive to an inlander.
