We humans have within us the innate drive to explore this planet we
call home. In one form or another we are trying to make sense of the
world around us. There is a distinction between mathematics and the
engrossing ideas with which it wrestles. When the mathematical barriers
are removed by expressing the concepts in familiar language, those who
thought they had no interest in science become captivated. Recently
many works of art are inspired by modern science, taking advantage of
what is real and important. This is what the most far-reaching discoveries
in physics during the last hundred years have done. Relativity and quantum
mechanics rewrote previously conceived rules of reality and now the
speculative superstring theory is generating major revisons in the themes
of modern physics.
Integrating the discoveries of physics into our worldview is a slow
process. Science is what makes us human. Science is the thread that
weaves us all into the fabric of reality. The superstring theory is
tackling the most fundamental problems in theoretical physics, so far
well beyond the reach of experimental guidance. Progress requires hard
work, patience, luck, and a significant amount of inspiration. The time
scales for success in that progress are beyond our prediction. Nevertheless
work zealously continues to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos and
will continue for years to come.
Albert Einstein sought a so-called unified field theory, a theory capable
of describing nature's forces within a single, all-encompassing, coherent
framework. He wanted to show the elegance and beauty of the universe
with clarity. Relativity. Now physicists believe they have finally found
a framework for a single theory that will be capable of describing all
phenomena - the superstring theory. The theory unifies the laws of the
large, that is laws that govern physics out to the far reaches of the
cosmos; and of the small, down to the smallest speck of matter so far
known. Einstein showed us that space and time behave in astoundingly
unfamiliar ways. Cutting-edge research has integrated his discoveries
into a quantum universe with many hidden dimensions whose lavishly entwined
geometry may hold the key to many profound questions.
Space, time, and motion vary with each individual, not only as each
perceives those realities but in relation to the space, time, and motion
in which the beholder exists. Sounds like a puzzle doesn't it? Well
it is not. But it is a basis for thinking deeply - contemplating the
here and now. I know it is a wonderful and very useful tool to keep
the mind active and growing. Somewhere in the description of the theory
metaphores showed that the more active a body is the longer it lives.
Good reason to keep on the move isn't it?
And so we should. Keep exploring and moving forward. Growing old more
slowly than when we sit and vegetate. And living more happily in the
process.
