Older than Velcro

Mike called me this morning to share a video about Things Younger Than John McCain. It was funny, but it reminded me that more than McCain’s age, it is his fragile health that is the real campaign issue. The last eight years have not been kind to McCain. He continues to battle cancer and has already stated that he will only be a one term president. I am skeptical that he will make it that far. Certainly his vice-president would take over much in the same way that Cheney took over for Bush. McCain’s only substantive act as president would be to pardon criminals left over from the Bush administration. That is if McCain makes it to the general election.

Although references to his age are common, his health is rarely discussed. His official photo ops show him surrounded by familiar public figures- they stand on each side of him practically holding him up. Sometimes they whisper in his ear to correct misstatements, which also raises the question of feeble mind as well as feeble body. His has announced that because he doesn’t have much money his campaign will rely on free media coverage. I suspect that is less an economic issue and more about limiting how much the public sees of his unhealthy body. I am quite sure that even the most loyal Republican won’t be inspired to vote for him if he makes it to the general election. I don’t think he will.

I have suspected for a long time that McCain will withdraw his name at the convention. I know that sounds pessimistic, but I think he is sicker than he is willing to admit to himself.
