Republicans under every rock

Divide and Conquer

Articles about how Obama must reach out to middle-aged women misses the point. It isn’t Obama that makes us angry, it is his sneering, women-hating supporters that make us wonder if we are in the wrong party.

I was going through some blogs yesterday, wondering why so many of these so-called hope-filled New Democrats enjoyed woman bashing, when it occurred to me that in the blogosphere, no one really knows if you are what you claim. What if all these diatribes against Hillary and/or her supporters, are really posted by Republicans? (Or at the very least, frustrated adolescent boys whose mothers have grounded them for the evening?) How easy it would be to fragment Democrats’ core constituencies with anonymous blogs.

Not a far-fetched idea. Karl Rove and the neo-cons have been spreading their nasties via e-mail jokes and historical fictions for many years. Not that Obama supporters haven’t lent support to their effort. Take the left wing talk show host, Rachel Maddox, for instance. She can’t say ‘Hillary’ without sneering. And she is just the most obvious example I could give.

I could come up with a dozen other examples of liberals who are splitting the party, but I don’t want to digress from my point. Now that the groundwork of woman-bashing is laid by Obama supporters, Republicans can easily take advantage of it. Just an occasional sneer about Hillary supporters is enough to start an new round of Democratic in-fighting.

I don’t think Obama can do anything about it. It is up to Democrats to find a way to unite against sexism. One step towards this is recognizing that the woman-bashing blogs you read are probably written by a Republican- or Rachel Maddox.
