Sometimes the Left is Wrong

Guns, Guns, Guns

As far as I have heard, criticism about Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is that the National Rifle Association approves of her. I don’t know if she is a member of the NRA, and it would worry me if she were because that organization (one that my father was once a proud member of) has been taken over by radical right wing nuts.

On the other hand, if the senator believes that the 2nd amendment to the Constitution is about more than just hunting and target practice- well, that’s what I believe also. Gun ownership should only be denied to a very limited, narrow segment of people such as felons or the mentally ill.

Although Democrats have some different philosophies about gun ownership, my philosophy doesn’t mean that I’m anything other than a good Democrat. It doesn’t disqualify Senator Gillibrand either. I also think that the ACLU is on the wrong side of this issue, even though I am a card carrying member of the ACLU.

By the way, hunting, target practice, and gun collecting were not the reasons the 2nd Amendment was included in the Bill of Rights. In King George’s England, only people of certain classes were allowed to own guns. It was considered a sovereign privilege. The founding principle of America was that each man (sorry, ladies) was his own sovereign.

Any other problems with Senator Gillibrand? I would be interested to hear them.
