debriefing

Sunday was Whatcom County's annual Ski to Sea race. Relay teams begin at Mt. Baker skiing, cross country skiing, running, bicycling, canoeing, and kayaking across Bellingham Bay. Among the other events is an antique car show at Boulevard Park. That’s where I was, sitting in the sun eating fried chicken, next to our 1929 Nash.

Tuesday I went on a field trip with third graders. It was an interesting day and deserves an essay all of its own. For now, I’ll just say that it was a ‘conservation site’ which really meant that it was an old homestead way out in the boondocks. The trip was themed as 1886, and everyone was expected to act like they were living in that time period. Since I was assigned the role of school teacher, I became ‘Miss Ima Meany’ and tried to act the part by whacking the desk with a switch. I must have been somewhat convincing because one child asked if I was really allowed to whack them. Because I was stationed at the school, I didn’t get to see the wood cutting, candle making, and food preparation. It was a memorable day, more for what I learned about the behavior of children than pioneer days.

Wednesday was Ryanne’s gymnastics performance. Since there were three coaches and six girls, I expected a lot more progress than I saw.

Thursday morning I went to school to set up for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade choral performance. After a couple of hours of taping together decorations, I decided not to volunteer for that activity again. The first performance was at 1:30, then the second at 7:00. I went to both for long, complicated reasons. The music and choreography was very well done, and I'm glad I have it taped from beginning to end.

Those are the event highlights of my week.
