France has it right.

Unlike Americans and especially President Obama, France understands that the burka- shrouding women from head to toe- is not an expression of religious freedom, but a effective way of enslaving women.

President Obama has repeatedly bragged that the United States affords women the freedom to wear religious garb, ignoring the fact that it is not women who make this choice. While it is easy to say that some women in America choose to wear veils, burkas or other oppressive coverings, the fact is that the choice is rarely theirs.

Has there ever been a more effective way of exerting control over a group of people? Chains on slaves would be comparable, but the burka has the added effect of making the slave invisible. It is easy to say that American women have the right to choose their religious practices, but religion in general is an effective tool of control.

While the Supreme Court has upheld wearing of religious garb, they have also ruled that pornography is a “I know it if I see it” judgement. Local communities are empowered to decide what people wear or don’t wear if the community judges it as obscene.

The burka is an obscenity that should not be tolerated.

I have high hopes that President Sarkozy and the freedom-loving French will ban burkas..
