A Great Story

Many people who have seen it claim that “Avatar” is 'the best movie since...” (fill in the blank with their favorite movie.) I will certainly check it out, and will probably be impressed, but we'll see. It has one strike against it already because of humanoids with tails.

When the “Lord of the Rings” came out, I thought that was the best movie I had ever seen. Even better than “The Road Warrior,” but now that I have watched it six or seven times (not counting “The Fellowship of the Ring” which I have watched twenty times) I have to say, “The Road Warrior” was better.

This crossed my mind because I was having a lot of trouble getting some small tasks done and I found myself thinking about the touching humanity of the gyro-pilot wiping his mouth with a napkin after eating dogfood. And when the idealistic settlers debate whether to fight the vicious marauders or “just walk away.” The movie has everything I expect from a great story: a battle of good and evil, ordinary people doing heroic things, taking on impossible odds and surviving.

I hope that “Avatar” has these elements, but that the good guys have tails will make me more critical than I otherwise would be.
