All Politics is Loco

In November an elected 'liberal' resigned shortly after election season was over. According to council rules, the remaining members were supposed to appoint a temporary replacement. But with three liberal and three conservative 'non-partisan' members, no candidate could win a majority vote. By default the decision was turned over to county executive Pete Kremin who thought he could avoid controversy by appointing an out-going member for the position.

So far so good. The out-going and newly appointed member crowed to the newspaper about how the conservatives were in power, but he spoke too soon. It appears to be illegal to appoint someone who is a council member to a second council member position at the same time, even if it is only for a month. And even funnier- appointing him might be fishy because it looks like cronyism, in essence they appointed one of their own.

I wouldn't have voted for (Ward Nelson) but he's a decent guy- for a conservative. I am a strong supporter of Pete Kremin, and was part of the liberal cabal that elected him. What it comes down to is: there is no neutral territory in Whatcom County politics. We go around looking for something to be outraged about, and we usually find it. Pete Kremin just forgot that no matter what he did, it would end up with a law suit.
