School Is In Session

Like swallows to Capistrano, college students have returned to Bellingham.

We went downtown to eat at our new/old favorite restaurant, the Shrimp Shack. We chose a window seat where we could watch the teenagers, fresh scrubbed faces and mother-laundered clothes, away from home for the first time even if only as far as a dorm room, make their first tentative foray into independence.

A month from now they will be immersed in the political turmoil that defines social life in Bellingham, condemning single-driver cars and meat eaters. Their clothes, hand washed in sinks and bathtubs, will be rumpled; the hopeful, bewildered expressions replaced by neo-sophistication gained by transferring loyalty from parent to prof.

It was sunny and dry today. Great weather for student watching.
