Just to Cute

Fifteen years ago, the power company cut down a blue spruce that was in the sunny corner of our yard. Since sunny corners are rare in my yard, I decided to use the new acreage for a flower bed. Usually that works out pretty well, but this year we had such a cold dry summer that I ended up with a nasty looking weed patch. Even the weeds looked sickly, but they sent down such deep roots that I couldn't get rid of them.

So I covered them up with ground cloth. It looked tacky. I was tempted to lay down beauty bark, but I didn't. So when the pumpkins showed up in the stores, I figured I could put enough of them out to look nice. Well, at least to distract from the ground cloth.

Mom and I ended up with a cheesy little pile of a dozen pumpkins, half a dozen mums, a witch-scarecrow from the craft store. We scattered leaves from the cut down walnut tree around for the finishing touch.

We did a pretty good job, but when winter is over and the leaves blow away, I think I'll find a more permanent solution to that part of the front yard. Maybe plant a tree.

Which is what this blog should have been about because when I lifted up the weed cloth to level it out for decorations, I saw healthy green dandelion weeds underneath it even though they shouldn't have gotten any sunshine for the last two months. So, like I said, it's time to plant a tree.
