My neice and I had a nice chat via Facebook last night. She is anxious to make a lot of changes in her life, and was happy to tell me about them. Writing short notes on chat gives plenty of time to think over what you might say, and the possibility of a rewrite before 'enter.' As she talked about her job and school, I almost told her about how things were when I was her age, and similar things that I had gone through. Then I got a vision of the way Ryanne's eyes glaze over when I tell her stories from my past. After a hardy laugh, I hit 'delete' and did a rewrite. It's one thing to have the wisdom that comes from experience, and some of that wisdom is don't try to pass it on. Nobody really wants advice- and that's a word to the wise. So I replaced my almost-post with a note completely about her, and we had a nice conversation. |
