Shower Games

While I was waiting for Jerry to get out of the shower so I could brush my teeth, I realized that “The Hunger Games” provides a teachable moment for anyone who doesn't understand how Social Darwinism works.

Now it doesn't seem likely that just running enough water to wet my toothbrush or rinse my mouth would cause enough of a drop in water pressure to make someone in the shower uncomfortable, but our house is very old.

Old houses have several other drawbacks. Like drafts. I think our house is well insulated until I feel that unmistakable cool breeze wafting across the living room late at night when I'm trying to watch television.

But waiting for Jerry to get out of the shower gave me lots of time to compare how in “The Hunger Games,” the working class is separated from each other, given just enough food to survive, and then terrorized by a lottery that will end in the death of teenagers who just want to eat Skittles (or in Katniss' case, squirrels) and talk on the phone with their girlfriends.
